It depends on you. Experts agree the benefits usually outweigh the risks if all three of these are true:

• Your symptoms bother you.
• You’re under 60, or within 10 years of when menopause started.
• You don’t have a health condition or family history that rules it out.

Outside that window, the math changes. So this is a conversation to have with your doctor, not a yes-or-no answer you can get from a search bar.

This worry comes up a lot, and the research is reassuring. HRT itself is not linked to weight gain. Midlife weight changes usually come from shifting hormones, muscle loss, and poor sleep. Those happen with or without HRT.

Some women do get bloating or a puffy, full feeling. If that happens to you, changing your dose or switching to a different form can help. Tell your doctor if it sticks around.

There's no automatic stop date, despite what you may have heard. Current guidance from The Menopause Society moved away from fixed time limits. Instead, you and your doctor check in from time to time.

You look at how you feel, weigh it against your own health risks, and decide together whether to keep going. Both of those change over the years, so your answer can change too.

Some women use it for a couple of years. Others stay on much longer.

“Bioidentical” just means the hormone is built to match the one your body makes. Plenty of HRT approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already fits that description.

The word gets confusing because it's also used to sell custom-mixed, or compounded, products. Those are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not check them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they go on sale. So it's worth asking your doctor which kind you're being offered.

If you have a history of breast cancer, it’s usually not safe to take the kind of HRT that treats your whole body. Most oncologists advise against it after a hormone-receptor-positive diagnosis. But that's not the end of the conversation.

For vaginal or urinary symptoms, nonhormonal treatments come first. If those don't bring enough relief, low-dose vaginal estrogen may be an option.

You and your doctor would weigh the risks and benefits first. If you take an aromatase inhibitor, make that call with both your gynecologist and your oncologist.

It depends on the product, your pharmacy, and what your plan covers. Plans vary a lot in what they charge and which drugs they include. Generic versions often cost less than brand-name ones, so ask your doctor and your pharmacist what your options are.
